Interview: Marina Costa-Jackson, The Tales of Hoffman

Ahead of its run at the Royal Opera House in London, we spoke with Marina Costa-Jackson to find out a little more about The Tales of Hoffman. Led by Juan Diego Flórez and Leonardo Caimi, the opera tells the story of poet Hoffmann as he recounts his doomed romances with three women.

Could you start by introducing yourself and sharing how your passion for opera singing began?

My name is Marina Costa-Jackson, and I was raised in a family where opera was an integral part of our lives. My mother is from Palermo, Italy, and my father, who served a two-year LDS mission in Italy, fell in love with the culture and raised us with Italian traditions. Family gatherings were always filled with music, and it was during one of these gatherings that my youngest sister, Miriam, at just 11 years old, began singing operatically, mimicking Luciano Pavarotti. Her passion for opera was contagious, and soon after, my older sister Ginger also took up voice lessons. I was more hesitant, struggling with stage fright and indecision, but when I heard my sisters singing “Belle Nuit” from *The Tales of Hoffmann* during a visit to Italy, I knew I couldn’t resist any longer. From that moment on, I committed myself to studying opera and eventually earned a place at the Academy of Vocal Arts in the United States.

How are you preparing to make your Royal Ballet and Opera debut in November?

This debut marks a significant milestone in my career, and I’m doing everything I can to prepare for it. However, more than anything, I want to express my deep gratitude for this incredible opportunity by living it to the fullest. It's a significant sacrifice for my family for me to be here, and I’m determined not to let it go to waste. I intend to enjoy every second of this experience.

Could you tell me about your role in The Tales of Hoffmann and how you approached bringing this character to life?

I’m playing Giulietta, a character often viewed as a heartless femme fatale. She’s fully aware of the damage she causes, but she’s driven by her desires. To bring her to life, I’ve focused on understanding the nuances of her character—her motivations, her allure, and the underlying coldness that makes her so intriguing to portray.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of being an opera singer?

One of the most challenging aspects of being an opera singer is being away from family. It truly is a sacrifice. Additionally, there’s the constant demand for perfection. Balancing vocal technique with deep emotional expression, all while maintaining the stamina to perform in long, intense operas, is no easy task. It requires immense discipline, focus, and a never-ending commitment to refining one’s craft.
