Edinburgh Fringe Chats (#139): Stacie Burrows, NO GOOD DRUNK

As anticipation builds for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, we’re catching up with a range of exciting creatives preparing to bring their work to the world’s largest arts festival this August. In this series, we delve into the stories behind the shows, the inspiration driving the artists, and what audiences can expect. Today, we’re joined by Stacie Burrows to find out more about her show, No Good Drunk.

1. Can you begin by telling us about your show and what inspired it?

No Good Drunk is a blend of film, original music and true stories about how alcoholism upended my family for generations. It’s set to the backdrop of West Texas dive bars and graveyards. My mother never knew her father because he drank himself to death in 1952. My mother died last year from Alzheimer’s. I spend the last few years of her life trying to piece together the mystery of her father to give her closure. In my research, I realized that history doesn’t always repeat itself, but it often rhymes. I saw a lot of patterns in the family.

2. What made you want to bring this work to the Fringe this year?

This will be my third fringe show. I’m a bit addicted to Fringe. I wanted to bring No Good Drunk this year because I’ve been building it for 5 years. After my mother died last year, I felt it was time to tell her story.

3. How would you describe your show in three words?

Exhilarating, haunting, powerful.

4. What do you hope audiences take away from watching your performance?

I want people to be able to see their own families in mine. I want them to know that if they’re tethered to an addict, they are not alone.

5. What’s your top tip for surviving the Fringe?

Drink water and gets lots of sleep.

6. Where and when can people see your show?

Pleasance Courtyard (Attic) 30 July-25 August (except 6,13, 20) 12:50 (60 minutes)
