ED FRINGE 2023 REVIEW | Murder She Didn’t Write, Degrees of Error

After 8 previous sold out runs, Fringe favourites Degrees of Error are back with Murder She Didn’t Write, an entirely improvised murder mystery, the plot of which is dictated by the audience. With brightly coloured characters and an audience member (chosen by a flat cap thrown into the crowd) deciding upon the murderer and victim using coloured cards, this Cluedo-esque set up is a fun take on the improv format. It is also a hit with the rest of the audience, who partake by shouting out suggestions of murder weapons and settings. Naturally, this makes for an absolutely ludicrous plot. The plot of my show: a murder by cheese plate (without any cheese) at a cat’s birthday party.
The show was completely over the top and at times nonsensical, but felt slick nonetheless. You wouldn’t believe that the cast found out who the murderer and victim were on stage, except that you see it for yourself. This is down to the brilliant company. It is clear that this is a show that requires a tight knit ensemble, unafraid to go with chaotic ideas and quick-witted enough to make them funny. The Degrees of Error company have nailed this. So whilst the plot may change with every show, I feel confident in saying that every show will be just as good.
If you’re after something silly, ridiculous and great fun, then, like myself, you’ll love this show.
