Fixing, currently running at the Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle Upon Tyne, is a unique solo show that combines themes of personal healing, family dynamics, and identity through a creative narrative format. Co-created by Matt Miller and Peader Kirk, the play centres on Matt's relationship with his father, who bought a classic car "Black Beauty" with dreams of a father-child restoration project after his divorce. Years later, Matt, now in his thirties, returns to the idea of "fixing"—both the car and the relationship with his father, as they process the impact of family separation and personal growth.

A distinctive feature of the performance is Miller’s drag alter-ego, Natalie Spanner, who embodies a character deeply knowledgeable about "maintenance" in many forms. The narrative sets us off on a "holistic car care" course that is both informative and metophorical. Through Natalie, the show explores complex, relatable questions about care, repair, and the emotional upkeep required to mend family and personal wounds. The show also innovatively uses drag to broaden the conversation on masculinity, vulnerability, and self-discovery, giving it an appeal that speaks to LGBTQ+ and general audiences alike.

Bursting into the space Natalie Spanner, complete with bejeweled blue overalls and yellow heels, sets the tone with playful audience interaction and a mechanical innuendo or two to keep things camp and compelling. Switching with seamless ease between Natalie and Matt the young boy, Miller is an endearing story teller who weaves childhood stories and trauma together with love and care to depict the light and darker moments of growing up. However, the narrative, for me, felt like it over promised, and under delivered. The dramatic build-up to the traumatic moments were raw and powerful, yet the resolution was underwhelming, disrupting the emotional journey and diminishing the impact of the story. That being said Miller's likeable qualities worked to elevate these modest moments pulling you straight back into the performance.

Can what’s broken ever truly be mended? Fixing is a journey of repair, resilience, and rediscovery, set against the backdrop of a classic car and an even more classic relationship.

at Alphabetti until 23rd November 2024.
