Catalan theatre is celebrating historic numbers of spectators in the 23rd edition of the Cataunya aixeca el teló (Catalonia raises the curtain) gala. This past season, 2023-24, Catalonia had 3.020.710 spectators and raised more than 92 million euros, breaking all records.

This year’s gala, broadcast on national TV, celebrated all kinds of performing arts, such as theatre and musicals, but also magic shows and the circus. Live performances were accompanied by the Original Soundtrack Orchestra (OSTO), playing on stage.

During the gala, the return of Cap butaca buida (No empty seats) was confirmed. This initiative aims to fill every seat in every theatre on a specific date. Last year, more than 55.000 spectators attended the theatre in just one single day. This year, the date will be March 22nd. Aside from consolidating the date in Catalonia, there was mention of aiming to inspire other countries, such as the UK, to join the initiative. West End, we’re coming for you!

All kinds of artists, politicians, theatre companies, and cultural sector representatives gathered in a joyous celebration of Catalan theatre, with great hopes of improving the numbers even more in the upcoming season.
