REVIEW | Bourgeois and Maurice: Pleasure Seekers, Northern Stage
Written by Stacy
A simply set stage, that is bathed in a silver backdrop. A lonely keyboard sits solo, off centre, in anticipation....the lights dim and Bourgeois and Maurice burst onto stage in a haze of technicolour, pop art glory. They arrive to deliver catchy little numbers, that once heard will not be forgotten.
This show is seventy-five minutes of unapologetic pop-satire that hits hard on the hilarity and wit front. It showcases punchy tunes that carry underlying, relevant messages. The audience are taken on a musical journey, that brings joy and frivolous abandon, to create an outlandish cabaret act, that is zany, wild and wonderful.
The high energy duo welcome their audience in like long lost friends, with warm rapport and comedy comebacks, in their search for non-stop pleasure and optimism. They navigate their way through numbers, such as What's the Point? Buying Sh*t and I Need Meat with endearing passion, and that 'can do' attitude to choreography that fits the stylistic aesthetics of the act. The satire is high, the comedy is rich, their chemistry is synced and the costumes are a kaleidoscopic treat that keeps on giving.
Bourgeois and Maurice are a match made in hedonistic heaven. It was pure, addictive pleasure from start to finish. I'm off now to download the soundtrack to keep the party going that little bit longer.
