& Juliet has captivated audiences since its debut in 2019 at the Manchester Opera House, following seven years of development. The musical went on to enjoy a celebrated run at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre, earning critical acclaim and multiple major theatre awards, including three Olivier Awards in 2020. Surprisingly, just a few years later, it was announced that the show would close on 25 March 2023. Now, as it embarks on a UK tour, audiences have the chance to experience the magic once again and there is no doubt that this musical is a roaring success!
For those unfamiliar with the plot, & Juliet takes Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy and flips the script, asking: what if Juliet didn’t die at the end of Romeo & Juliet? Backed by a powerhouse pop soundtrack featuring hits by Max Martin—spanning some of the biggest artists like Katy Perry, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC—this high-energy musical takes audiences on an unforgettable journey of love, self-discovery, and second chances.
With a book by Schitt’s Creek writer David West Read, the story weaves together two narratives: Juliet’s reimagined fate and the relationship between Shakespeare (Jay McGuiness) and his wife, Anne Hathaway (Lara Denning). As Anne challenges Shakespeare to rewrite Juliet’s story and give her control over her destiny, their own marriage is put under the spotlight in a witty and heartfelt exploration of love, power, and reinvention.
There is no doubt that what makes & Juliet execute a first-class performance is the phenomenal cast at its heart, directed by Luke Sheppard (My Son’s A Queer, But What Can You Do?).
Led by Gerardine Sacdalan in her first leading role as Juliet, she delivers a powerhouse performance, effortlessly drawing in audiences with her natural charisma while hitting every big number with passion and precision. Joined in the second half by Liam Morris (first cover Romeo) who supports her immensly in his character. Jay McGuiness and Lara Denning make a brilliant duo as Shakespeare and Anne, bringing both humour and heart to their roles. However, it’s Denning’s stunning rendition of ‘That’s The Way It Is’ which truly steals the show, leaving audiences breathless. Sandra Marvin and Lee Latchford-Evans are the theatre power couple we never knew we needed! Portraying the roles of Lance and Nurse Angeliqué, they continue to naturally bounce off one another and give the most joyous performances of the evening. I’d like to see them together in more shows please!
& Juliet seizes the opportunity to be inclusive with both hands and it’s May and François’ relationship, played by Jordan Broatch and Kyle Cox, which enables them to do this brilliantly. A heartfelt and pivotal part of the show, their own journey adds more depth to the story. It gives a chance to reflect on the importance of being true to oneself while seamlessly intertwining with the musical’s message of rewriting fate and embracing new beginnings.
We also can’t overlook the incredible ensemble of & Juliet, who bring electrifying energy to every musical number. Jennifer Weber’s choreography seamlessly weaves into the narrative, creating dynamic and visually stunning moments that deserve endless praise (I found myself in awe of this alone!).
Soutra Gilmour’s vibrant set design enhances the production’s bold aesthetic, while Howard Hudson’s striking lighting design works in perfect harmony to elevate each scene. They are further supported by Andrzej Goulding’s video design and animation, which adds depth and context to the ever-evolving world of the story.
As someone who often doesn’t enjoy jukebox musicals because often songs are shoehorned into a loose narrative, you can’t help but adore everything & Juliet has to offer. It fizzes with joy and a huge heart that sticks with you long after! (I mean especially if the amount of confetti I now have in my possession is hilarious alone!)
On tour until June 2025, there’s no better time to enjoy this production!
