When performed at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2022, the show received mixed reviews from critics. Without having seen that staging, it wouldn't be fair to compare; this is a standalone response to the show. Adapted for the stage by Zinnie Harris, 101 Dalmatians The Musical features a book by Johnny McKnight and music by Douglas Hodge. This new musical faithfully combines Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel and the classic 1961 Disney film, adding side plots and extra characters to create a heartwarming production perfect for the whole family.
101 Dalmatians The Musical follows the story of Pongo and Perdi, two dalmatians whose idyllic life with their humans Tom and Danielle is turned upside down when their puppies are kidnapped by the evil Cruella de Vil. Cruella, obsessed with creating a luxurious fur coat made from dalmatians, hires two bumbling henchmen to steal the puppies resulting in a daring rescue mission.
The dogs in this story are brought to life with exceptional puppetry by designer Jimmy Grimes. They talk and even sing throughout the show, adding an intriguing dynamic to the storytelling. This immediately engages the audience and elicits a few giggles. The cast’s talent and skill are truly admirable, and they deliver an amazing performance! Notably, Emma Thornett and Benedict Hastings are stand outs as Pongo and Perdi.
Danny Hendrix and Charles Brunton are a delightful duo to witness as Casper and Jasper. Their chemistry is effortless, creating one of the most unforgettable performances of the evening. Faye Tozer brings a powerful presence to her role as Cruella De Vil, perfectly capturing the blend of wickedness and exuberance the character demands (though at times it veers into pantomime territory). Her musical performances are a highlight, with her standout number, "Animal Lover," truly stealing the show in the first act.
101 Dalmatians The Musical thrives as a family show, brimming with all the magic that theatre can create! With its beautiful blend of heartwarming storytelling and brilliant puppetry - this musical will appeal to audiences of all ages!
At Curve Leicester until 27 July as part of a wider UK tour until 05 January 2025.
