7 Things To Watch on Netflix This Autumn.
Is it me or when you look outside you can't believe it's already dark by 6pm?
The nights definitely seem to be drawing in a lot quicker this Autumn and for me this means getting home and in PJ's by 6pm, lighting all of the Pumpkin spiced candles and snuggling under the duvet with some Netflix (or a book, depending on what mood I'm in that night).
I'm trying to combat some of my anxiety during this time of the year by getting myself into a better lifestyle routine. You can read more about it in my post How To Look After Your Mental Health this Autumn. (coming soon).
With that in mind, I'm really enjoying the host of things being streamed on Netflix right now and I wanted to share my 7 favourites for you that I'd highly recommend.
Making a Murderer.
3 years ago the first season premiered and I am one of the people who was instantly hooked by its narrative. This true crime documentary first came to Netflix around 3 years ago and follows the case surrounding the murder of Teresa Halbach, Steven Avery currently serving time for this crime and so is his co-defendant and nephew Brendan Dassey. The idea that Avery has been wrongfully accused of Halbach's murder is the centrefold of the story. The first series was left on quite the cliffhanger so I'm delighted that there's another season and we're diving deeper into the context of this case. I've watched 3 episodes and I'm already addicted. If you've seen it, what are your thoughts? I do believe Dassey is innocent but there's something about Avery that doesn't make me so certain...
Wonder.
I've finally watched the film adaptation of the New York Times bestseller, WONDER by R.J.Palacio and it's a must-see. It tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. There are parts of the film that really tug at your heartstrings but it's really well written and captured the reality of young people with disabilities who are challenged by attending mainstream education.
The Haunting of Hill House.
I love horror films and TV programmes so it was no surprise that The Haunting of Hill House would be right up my street. It's a modern reimagining of the Shirley Jackson novel that follows siblings who as children grew up in what becomes the most famous house in the country. Now as adults, they are forced to go back to the house to finally confront the ghosts of their past. Some of the ghosts still hang in their minds, whilst others are still stalking the shadows of Hill House. It's a pretty terrifying programme but great for Halloween if you enjoy a scare!
Dancing Queen.
If you enjoyed Dance Moms or Ru Paul's Drag Race then you'll probably love Dancing Queen. I binge watched this series in a weekend and I have no regrets. Justin Johnson is better known as drag artist Alyssa Edwards, but he is, in fact, more than a drag artist but an accomplished choreographer and dance teacher. This short documentary series follows Justin in his hometown of Mesquite, Texas at his highly competitive Beyond Dance Company. 80% of this programme really reminded me of Dance Moms but it also gave us a fantastic introduction and insight into Justin's life. I really enjoyed it and I'd love for a second season to come.
To All The Boys I've Loved Before.
I was highly anticipating this adaptation of Jenny Han's novel and I wasn't disappointed. Sometimes there's nothing like watching a Teen Comedy film and this one doesn't miss the mark. We find out what happens when Lara Jean's secret love letters are mailed out to each of her five crushes. I've recently read this book and enjoyed it just as much too! This film is a great watch if you're planning a girly movie night this Autumn.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
I am a huge fan of the original series of Sabrina The Teenage Witch that I used to watch growing up (it was one of those programmes I'd always look forward to watching after school) so this remake was really exciting. I've only watched one episode but it's very different to the original but in a good way. It's quite dark in comparison to the original too and the filming is very quirky. I know I will be binge-watching this for the rest of the month.
Been So Long
A modern musical is on Netflix and I'm excited about it, especially as its set in London's Camden area. It's a modern day romance around Simone who is a dedicated single mother who on a rare night out on the town is charmed by a handsome yet troubled stranger, Raymond. This ignites old and new feelings. I can't wait to give it my verdict!
