Getting Into Character with A Midsummer Night's Dream, Curve Theatre, Leicester.
Curve's long awaited community production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream begins this week and is the perfect theatre trip for you to enjoy with the family this summer. This funky, fun and imaginative new production directed by Curve Associate Artist Nick Winston will bring together a cast of 70 local people between the ages of 12 to 63. This exciting new production is a reimagining of one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies, and feels like it will be the most exciting one with Curve's Made At Curve stamp on it yet.
From witnessing some of the costume design templates, some of the make up and hair that is being shown and a sneak peak into the stage design, this vibrant production will not be one to miss.It comes with a real WOW FACTOR! A lot of the creative influences onto the traditional story are modernistic, contemporary and lots of fun.

If you don't know the basis of the story then Hermia loves Lysander, Lysander loves Hermia, Helena loves Demetrius and Demetrius loves Hermia. Under the light of the moon, this lover's quartet become intertwined in magical mishaps in a mysterious forest at the hands of the mischievous fairy sprite Punk. The misuse of magic in the hands of Punk causes chaos amongst the young lovers and fairies alike, wreaking romantic havoc and unfathomable happenings which can only be explained away as nothing more than a surreal dream..
Watching how the young cast collaborate with the make up, hair and costume team to transform into their individual characters. Their is a real feel for a punk styled hair and striking make up. The young people have themselves created the make up and hair looks directed by Verity Pitt, professional theatre wigs and make up artist. Verity explained that she wanted them to experiment with looks and ideas based on ideas from the costume designs. What has been created is delicate, colourful designs around the eye area of the cast. The colours are bright, close to the forest/naturalistic themes but also really align well with the context of the production.
Verity also explained the young people's enthusiasm to play with the ideas she had to create the looks, all is very individual to that person and this translates into their decided hairstyle too. For some whose performance in this production will be their first this shows the atmosphere and support they have received from the team at Curve. I'm really interested to see what the performers look like with their costumes on too. As well as the stage design which is definitely something I hadn't seen before and is very exciting.
